Zendesk AI agent pricing has two tiers. AI agents Essential is included in Zendesk Suite plans at no extra cost and handles light deflection. AI agents Advanced is billed separately on an outcome model, roughly $1.50 to $2 per automated resolution depending on whether you commit to volume, above a small monthly allowance of about 5 to 15 resolutions per agent. The practical consequence is that your AI bill grows in direct proportion to how well the automation works.

That is not a criticism of outcome pricing, which is defensible and arguably fairer than charging for a bot that resolves nothing. It is a budgeting warning. Most support teams model AI cost as a fixed line and discover a variable one. This article walks the actual numbers so you can decide with arithmetic instead of a sales deck.

What is included in each Zendesk AI tier

The split matters because the two tiers do genuinely different jobs, and teams frequently evaluate the free one and budget for the paid one without noticing the gap.

AI agents Essential

Included with Suite plans. It covers autoreplies, help-center article suggestions, and generative answers drawn from content you have already published. It is a deflection layer: it tries to satisfy the customer before a ticket reaches a human, mostly by surfacing the right documentation. When it works, the customer self-serves. When it does not, the ticket lands in the queue as normal.

AI agents Advanced

Priced separately, per automated resolution. This is the tier that actually closes tickets end to end, handling the back-and-forth and resolving the issue rather than suggesting an article. In May 2026 Zendesk began rolling the advanced capabilities into Suite and Support plans, which absorbed the roughly $50 per agent Copilot line. The per-resolution charge above your allowance did not go away, and third-party teardowns put it in the $1.20 to $1.50 band for verified resolutions on committed plans.

How much does a Zendesk AI agent cost at real volume?

A resolution price only means something once you multiply it by your queue. Here is the shape of the bill at a few common volumes, using $1.50 as a committed-volume rate and ignoring the small included allowance since it is rounding error at these numbers.

Automated resolutions per monthApproximate monthly AI costApproximate annual AI cost
500$750$9,000
2,000$3,000$36,000
5,000$7,500$90,000
10,000$15,000$180,000

Those figures sit on top of the seats you already pay for. At 2,000 resolutions a month you have added roughly the cost of a support hire to your Zendesk invoice. That may well be the right trade, since 2,000 resolutions is more than one person can handle and the agent works nights. But it is a decision worth making explicitly, and it is the moment most finance teams start asking questions.

Why per-resolution pricing gets uncomfortable

The structural oddity is that the meter runs fastest exactly when the product is doing its job. Improve your help center, tighten your agent's instructions, expand the ticket types it can handle, and you are rewarded with a larger bill. Teams notice this and start behaving strangely: capping which ticket types the agent may touch, or leaving deflection opportunities on the table to keep the number down. Optimizing against your own automation is a bad place to end up.

There is also a definitional question worth pressing your rep on. What counts as a resolution? If a customer replies again after the agent closes the ticket, is that a second resolution? If the agent hands off to a human halfway, do you pay? Vendors define verified resolution differently and the definition moves your bill materially. Get it in writing before you sign, and if you are running a broader evaluation, our guide on what AI customer service agents cost compares the models side by side.

When Zendesk built-in AI agents are the right call

Plenty of the time, honestly. If you are already committed to Zendesk, your ticket volume is modest, and your questions are answerable from help-center content, the native agents are the lowest-friction option on the market. There is no integration to build, no API token to scope, and no second vendor in your security review. Essential costs nothing extra, so there is no reason not to turn it on and measure what it deflects.

The calculus changes on three fronts. Volume is the obvious one: past a few thousand resolutions a month, flat-rate pricing wins on arithmetic alone. The second is reach, since a native agent knows what is in Zendesk and the real answer often lives in your order database or billing system. The third is cost predictability, which matters more to some finance teams than the absolute number.

The flat-rate alternative

Third-party agents connect to Zendesk through its REST API using a scoped token you issue and can revoke. Tickets stay in Zendesk, so your SLAs, triggers, views, and reporting keep working. What changes is the billing model: a flat subscription rather than a meter, which means each additional resolution costs you nothing and improving the agent is unambiguously good news.

The other gain is context. Because the agent connects from outside, it can read the systems where answers actually live rather than only your published articles, which is what lets it resolve order and account questions instead of escalating them. Support teams running this setup usually treat it as one part of their wider support operations stack rather than a single bot, and route different ticket types to different agents. You can compare what is available on our AI agents for Zendesk page.

What to do before you commit

Run the numbers on your own queue rather than a vendor's example. Pull your last three months of tickets, sort by type, and estimate honestly what share an agent could fully resolve without a human. That share, times your monthly volume, times the per-resolution rate, is your real annual AI cost. Compare it against a flat subscription and against the labor it replaces.

Then set the boundary before you deploy anything, native or third-party. Informational tickets can be resolved automatically. Refunds, cancellations, plan changes, and account access should wait for a person until you have watched the agent work for a few weeks. Our checklist on how to vet an AI agent covers the permission questions worth asking, and AI agents for customer service has the broader category view.

The short answer

Zendesk AI agents Essential is free with Suite and worth enabling immediately. Advanced costs roughly $1.50 to $2 per automated resolution above a small allowance, which is fine at low volume and becomes a four-figure or five-figure monthly line as you scale. If your volume is small and your world is entirely inside Zendesk, use what Zendesk gives you. If you are clearing thousands of resolutions a month, or your answers live in other systems, a flat-rate agent connected through the API will usually cost less and resolve more.
