That single question, how concentrated your work is, decides the purchase more than any feature comparison will.

What is the difference between Glean and Microsoft Copilot?
Copilot is an assistant embedded inside applications you already use. It draws on Microsoft Graph, which means it can reason over your mail, your chats, your files and your calendar without you leaving the app you are in. The integration is the product. Nobody has to be trained to open a new tool, because there is no new tool.
Glean is a search and knowledge platform that sits above your applications rather than inside one of them. It connects to Confluence, Slack, Google Drive, Salesforce, Jira, GitHub, ServiceNow, SharePoint and dozens more, builds a permissions-aware index across all of them, and answers questions that span systems. The breadth is the product.
That difference explains most of the disagreements you will read. A Microsoft-centric company evaluating both will find Copilot answers nearly everything and Glean feels like an expensive duplicate. A company running fifty SaaS tools will find Copilot confidently answering from a third of its knowledge and quietly missing the rest, which is a worse failure than not answering at all.
How much does Glean cost compared to Microsoft Copilot?
Copilot has a list price. Glean does not. That asymmetry is itself a meaningful difference for a buyer, because one of these you can budget from a web page and the other requires a sales cycle before you know whether it is affordable.

The Glean contract figures come from Vendr's aggregated transaction data, which reports a median of $98,890 a year with observed deals from $29,880 to $208,897 and average negotiated savings of 20.19%. That range matters: the low end sits well under the supposed 100-seat floor, which tells you the minimum is more negotiable than the published commentary suggests. Copilot looks cheaper on the sticker and often is, but only if you already hold the Microsoft 365 licences underneath it. If you do not, the honest comparison includes the base suite, and that changes the arithmetic substantially. Our Microsoft 365 Copilot pricing breakdown works through the all-in figure per seat.
Which one handles agents better?
Both vendors now sell agents, and this is where the billing models diverge most sharply.
Glean includes unlimited agent creation and testing with an Enterprise Flex seat. You only consume credits when an agent actually runs. A typical run costs about 7 FlexCredits, and a complex one about 114, with consumption driven by how many connectors the agent searches, how many steps it takes, how much memory it holds, how many tools it calls and which model tier runs each step. That is a 16-fold spread, so agent design, not seat count, decides the bill.
Microsoft agents are built in Copilot Studio, which bills tenant-pooled Copilot Credits. The wrinkle is that Copilot Studio now runs on three different runtimes Microsoft calls harnesses, and the GitHub Copilot harness starts charging credits when you begin building, not when you publish. Prototyping, previewing, testing and generating evaluations all draw credits for an agent no customer has spoken to yet. The mechanics are covered in Copilot Studio pricing.
So if you intend to run a genuine bake-off, note the asymmetry before you start: building and testing agents costs nothing on Glean and costs money on Microsoft. That does not make Glean cheaper overall, but it does make experimentation cheaper, and experimentation is most of what a pilot is.
There is one thing neither handles well, and it is worth being blunt about. Both index documents and answer questions about them. Neither reliably turns a document into structured data you can put in a system of record. If your actual problem is that 400 commercial leases hold rent escalations and renewal dates nobody has in a spreadsheet, search will find the file and tell you what it says, but you still need something that will turn a lease PDF into a structured abstract. Buying an enterprise search platform to solve a data extraction problem is a common and expensive mistake.
Does Microsoft Copilot search outside Microsoft 365?
Partly, and the caveat matters. Microsoft supports Graph connectors that pull external content into the index, so it is not strictly true that Copilot sees nothing outside its own ecosystem. What is true is that each connector is a project: it has to be configured, permissioned, maintained and paid for in engineering time, and the depth of what comes back rarely matches what Copilot achieves natively inside SharePoint or Outlook.
Glean treats cross-system reach as the default rather than an extension. If your knowledge lives in Confluence and Slack and Salesforce, that difference is the whole decision. If it lives in SharePoint and Teams, you are paying a large premium for connectors to systems you barely use.
The uncomfortable version of this question is what happens when an assistant answers from partial data. A tool that says "I could not find that" is safe. A tool that confidently summarises the third of your knowledge it can see, and stays silent about the two thirds it cannot, produces answers that look complete and are not. That risk scales with how much of your work sits outside the index, whichever product you choose.
Is Microsoft Copilot actually being adopted?
Worth checking before you assume the safe choice is the safe choice. On Microsoft's Q2 FY2026 earnings call in January 2026, roughly 15 million users had purchased full Copilot licences against about 450 million Microsoft 365 commercial subscribers. That is a conversion rate near 3.3% after roughly two years on the market.
Read that carefully rather than as a verdict. It says most organizations that could buy Copilot have not, which is a fair signal about perceived value at $30 a seat. It does not say the product fails for the companies that did buy. But it does mean "everyone is buying Copilot" is not an accurate description of the market, and if that assumption is doing work in your business case, replace it with a pilot.
Utilization is the number to watch on either product. Enterprise search and assistants are both bought for everybody and used intensively by a minority. Licence the teams with a demonstrated problem, measure, then expand. That approach costs less on Copilot and costs dramatically less on Glean, where the seat minimum makes an over-broad rollout expensive to unwind.

That last row of the table is the one most buyers skip past, so it is worth stating directly. A large share of the companies evaluating Glean against Copilot are trying to solve a specific, bounded problem: deflect support tickets, screen inbound candidates, triage invoices, answer policy questions. Both of these products are platforms, priced as platforms, and adopted as platforms. Buying either to obtain one capability means paying for an index of your entire company to get a feature.
If that describes you, price the outcome directly before you price the platform. A ready-made agent starts at a flat $29 a month with no seat minimum and no quote process, and it will tell you within a month whether the underlying idea works. If it does and the problem turns out to be company-wide knowledge access rather than one workflow, the platform conversation will still be there, and you will walk into it with evidence instead of a hypothesis.
