The capabilities are concrete, which is refreshing in a category full of vague promises.

• Ask Notion answers questions from your entire workspace and from connected sources, so a teammate can ask where something is decided instead of hunting through pages.
• Custom Agents (added in Notion 3.3, February 2026) let teams build specialized, reusable workflows rather than using the general agent.

All of this happens where your plans and docs already live, which is the real advantage. There is no export, no second tool, and no context lost in translation. For work that stays inside the workspace, that is hard to beat.

How much do Notion AI agents cost?

Notion Agent and Ask Notion are included in the Business plan at $20 per user a month billed annually. Free and Plus plans get only a small lifetime allowance of AI responses, not full agents, so agents effectively start at the Business tier. The line that surprises teams is Custom Agents: as of May 2026 they bill at $10 per 1,000 Notion credits, with no rollover, on top of your seats.

That means the per-seat price you budgeted is not the whole bill once you build a Custom Agent to run something high-volume. Standard Notion Agent and Ask Notion stay included, so light and moderate use is covered by the flat seat price. It is heavy, repeated, custom automation that turns into a usage-based line, and it is worth modeling that credit burn before you point a Custom Agent at a busy workflow.

Where Notion agents stop

The built-in agents are strong inside the workspace and through Notion's own connectors. The wall appears when the real work spans systems Notion does not own: updating a Notion project from your billing platform, syncing a CRM that is not connected, acting on data in an app outside the Notion graph. Ask Notion reaches connected sources, but it is not a general integration layer for your whole stack, and Notion Agent acts inside the workspace rather than orchestrating your other tools.

A common version of this is documents in, deliverable out. Reports and notes pile up in Notion, and someone has to turn them into something a stakeholder actually reads. The workspace agent can structure the content, and when the output needs to leave as a deck, you can turn the report straight into a presentation rather than rebuilding it slide by slide. That handoff is the kind of cross-system step a third-party agent is built for.

When to add a third-party agent

Add one when the job crosses out of Notion or when Custom Agent credits would add a meaningful metered line. A marketplace agent connects to Notion through its API with scoped permissions and treats the workspace as one connected system among several, moving work between Notion and the tools it does not natively reach. It runs on a flat subscription, so heavy cross-system work does not compound a credit meter. The tradeoff is that you are adding a second vendor to your review, which is worth it only when the built-in agents genuinely stop short. Governance stays the same either way. Scope the agent to the workspace areas and systems it needs, keep sensitive actions behind approval, and check the audit trail. How does Notion AI work?

Notion AI works by indexing the pages, databases and connected sources inside your workspace, then answering questions or taking actions against that index. Ask Notion retrieves and cites answers from your own content. Notion Agent goes a step further and edits the workspace directly, creating databases, pages and properties on your behalf rather than just describing what to do.

Two details decide whether it feels reliable. The first is permissions: the agent sees what the person prompting it can already see, so answers differ from one colleague to the next, and a page nobody shared is a page the agent cannot use. The second is coverage. Notion indexes your workspace plus connected sources such as Google Drive and Slack, and everything outside that set is invisible to it. Most complaints that Notion AI "missed" something trace back to content that was never in the index.

Is Notion Agent free?

No. Notion Agent is part of the Business plan at $20 per user a month, not the Free or Plus tiers. Custom Agents, the ones that run on a schedule or a trigger without anybody prompting them, meter separately on credits at $10 per 1,000 credits once the included allowance is used up.

That split matters more than the headline price. Ordinary agent use by a person sitting at their keyboard is covered by the seat. Automation that runs on its own is the part with a variable meter attached, and it is also the part teams tend to scale up fastest once it works.
